Description

A delicious and hearty stew with a rich onion flavor topped with cheesy bread.


Ingredients

  • 2 pounds beef chuck, cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 4 cups onions, thinly sliced
  • 4 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup dry white wine
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 teaspoons dried thyme
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 baguette, sliced
  • 2 cups shredded Gruyere cheese

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, heat olive oil over medium heat.
  2. Add onions and cook until caramelized, about 20 minutes.
  3. Add beef and brown on all sides.
  4. Stir in flour, thyme, salt, and pepper.
  5. Add wine and broth, bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 1.5 to 2 hours.
  6. During the last 15 minutes, preheat oven to 350°F.
  7. Place sliced baguette on a baking sheet and top with Gruyere cheese.
  8. Bake until cheese is melted and bubbly.
  9. Serve stew in bowls, topped with cheesy bread.

Notes

  • For a thicker stew, add more flour.
  • Pair with a side salad for a complete meal.
